Where I’d Move If I Wasn’t Already in Love with My Neighbourhood

by Melanie Ward

Confession: I adore my neighbourhood. It fits my lifestyle, I know the shortcuts, and I’ve got my coffee shops and parks on autopilot. But as a realtor, I can’t help daydreaming about other parts of Calgary too.

If I had to pack up tomorrow and move, here’s my shortlist of communities I’d be excited about — and why.

Mahogany

If you love the water, Mahogany is the dream. It’s got Calgary’s largest freshwater lake, sandy beaches, and year-round activities. Think paddleboarding in summer and skating in winter. The community itself is lively, with pathways, schools, and tons of amenities. It feels like a mini resort, but you’re still in the city.

Kensington

For my inner urbanite. Kensington is vibrant, walkable, and full of independent shops, cafés, and art galleries. You can grab brunch, wander along the river, then hop on the LRT downtown. It’s ideal if you crave a mix of community charm and city convenience.

Altadore

This neighbourhood is perfect for families who love being close to nature without giving up modern conveniences. It’s steps from the river pathways, has amazing schools, and is home to some seriously beautiful infills. The tree-lined streets don’t hurt either.

Sunnyside

Sunnyside is like its own little village. It’s artsy, eclectic, and ridiculously close to downtown. Whether it’s browsing the farmers’ market, grabbing a latte, or biking to work, Sunnyside gives you the “small town in a big city” feeling.

Auburn Bay

Yes, another lake community — what can I say, water is a big draw! Auburn Bay has a strong family vibe, with schools, playgrounds, and a sense of community. Summer barbecues by the lake, winter hockey on the ice — it’s all part of the package.

The Takeaway

Calgary is full of hidden gems. Whether you want urban buzz, lake living, or family-friendly streets, there’s a community that matches your lifestyle. And honestly? That’s one of the things I love most about being a realtor — helping people find the pocket of Calgary that feels like home.
